Sheffield Garden Walk (2011)
![]()
Thank You!!!
Many, many thanks to everyone who made this year’s Garden Walk one of the most fun and successful ever!
Hats off and special blessings to Kathy Bathurst and Therese Anderson and the Special Events Commission for all they did to make things work so well. Thanks to all of our volunteers! You looked great in our parish t-shirts!
Thank you, too, to everyone who enjoyed everything we had to offer from our booths.
Overview
The Sheffield Garden Walk, sponsored by the Sheffield Neighbors Association (SNA), is celebrating its 43rd Anniversary this year. St. Vincent's, along with other neighborhood organizations and businesses, each hosts several tents staffed by volunteers selling assorted foods and drinks. All revenues from these activities benefit local charities and schools. This event is the biggest fundraiser for St. Vincent's and all funds raised at our tents benefit the Church's Seton Food Pantry and Seton Sandwich Kitchen, which serve the poor and homeless in our neighborhood.
Location & Access
The Festival will be setup on Sheffield Ave. between Belden & Webster (see map).
Travel there by bike or by CTA -- the Red and Brown lines stop at the Fullerton 'L' station.
If you need to drive, parking is available at: St. Vincent visitors and volunteers may find it easier to enter the festival at the Webster St. Entrance (the Main Entrance.) An Information Booth will be located nearby, at which brochures and maps will be available describing the local gardens open for tours. The suggested Festival donation is $7 (Noon to 3:00 p.m.) and $10 (3:00 p.m. to closing) on both days.
Volunteering at St. Vincent's
The Special Events Commission is looking for
numerous volunteers to help with the event,
working two- and three-hour shifts in one of our six tents.
The St. Vincent tents will be located immediately east of the Church (the green dashes on the map.) Volunteers should sign-in before starting their shifts, and they will then be instructed on the details of each job. We are asking volunteers to stay 15 minutes extra, to help with the transition to the next shift of volunteers. After their shifts, volunteers can enjoy the food, fun and entertainment of the festival!
2011 Garden Walk Activities
Garden Tours are self-guided and visit more than 90 Gardens in the neighborhood.
Brochures, including maps, are available at the Information Booth near the Webster St. Entrance.
The Kids' Corner on Kenmore Ave. (between Belden & Webster) will have family friendly attractions including pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and the popular "Pig Train." Admission to the Kids' Corner is free and the attractions are reasonably priced. Architectural Tours of the historic Sheffield neighborhood will view Victorian-era architectural styles dating to 1875 including Italianate, Romanesque, and Queen Anne. These free one-hour walking tours are conducted by the Historic Resources Committee of the Sheffield Neighborhood Association. The tours leave from the Information Booth near the Webster St. Entrance; please sign up in advance at the Booth. Much of the Sheffield neighborhood is a National Historic District. Sheffield also is home to four Chicago landmark districts: the McCormick Row Houses, the Armitage-Halsted commercial district, the Fremont Row Houses, and the newly designated Bissell Street Rowhouses. Big Bands @ Little Sisters of the Poor, on Belden between Lakewood and Racine, will feature Barry Winograd and the Alternatives Big Band on Saturday, and Barry Winograd and The Alternatives Little Big Band on Sunday. Enjoy these free big bands outdoors and the hospitality of the St. Mary's residents and staff. While there, visit their wonderful enabling garden. Please visit Sheffield Neighbors Association (SNA) for more information about the SNA and the Garden Walk, including details about the neighborhood gardens that will be open for tours.
